John E Mitchell, M.D., Board Member
John E Mitchell has volunteered with H.E.R.O. for over a decade, has participated in more than 20 missions as the Coordinator of our Surgical Outreach Program and is currently a board member at H.E.R.O. Dr. Mitchell is a Trauma Surgeon and is the Director of Trauma/Acute Care Surgery Unit at Geisinger Community Medical Center. He received his Bachelor’s degree in biology from York College of CUNY and his degree in medicine from SUNY Downstate. As a medical student at Downstate, he mentored and taught minority students aspiring to pursue careers in the sciences through the Science and Technology Entry Program (STEP). In 1998 Dr. Mitchell participated in his first humanitarian mission to Guyana with Dr. Stephen Carryl of the Overseas Medical Assistance Team (OMAT) and has made humanitarian trips to Grenada and Carriacou as part of his commitment to “give back” to the Caribbean region. Dr. Mitchell is a member of several professional organizations including the American College of Surgeons, Society of Critical Care Medicine, American Trauma Society, the Pennsylvania Medical Society, and the Lackawanna County Medical Society.
